A Mother's Journey: Balancing Education and Family

Whitney, a 33-year-old mother of four, has just completed her criminal justice studies at Montgomery Community College. This is a big deal for her, but she's not feeling the celebration just yet. Why? Because she had to take a break from her job to focus on school, and now money is tight. With four kids to take care of, ages 5 to 11, she's struggling to make ends meet, especially with Christmas just around the corner. Whitney's story is one of strength and resilience. She's overcome a lot: a tough past with a criminal record from her youth, an abusive household, and the trauma of a sexual assault. She's done it all while raising her kids alone. But now, she's asking for a little help. And she's found it in unexpected places.Orion Communities, a nonprofit in Phoenixville, has stepped in to lend a hand. They've provided gift cards to help put food on the table and presents under the tree. Whitney is grateful for this kindness and hopes she can pay it forward one day. Operation Holiday, a program started in 1991, is another source of support. It's been helping families in need for 35 years, providing food and gifts to children. Last year, they helped 366 kids and 189 families. This year, they're working with 21 agencies to support 403 children. All the money raised goes directly to helping families, with no overhead costs.
