A pair of food lovers turn passion into a thriving catering business

When two people with different backgrounds find common ground in food, amazing things can happen. Lindsay started baking as a teenager, working at a local club and later attending culinary school to refine her pastry skills. Tim, on the other hand, never cooked as a kid but discovered his love for food in his twenties after tasting a gourmet pizza topped with fresh arugula—his "mind was blown, " he said.
Their paths crossed in 2004 through a mutual friend, though Lindsay wasn’t impressed at first. "His cooking changed my mind, " she admitted. By 2007, they were married and juggling side jobs while growing Lindsay’s dessert business. When the recession hit in 2008, they saw an opportunity. Tim, with his marketing background, joined full-time, and they officially launched Runaway Spoon in 2010 after a successful wedding show.
Their big break came when they landed a contract for a 400-person fundraiser early on. Nervous but determined, they delivered—and the word spread. Instead of sticking to wedding cakes, they shifted to full catering, adding unique themed dinners at places like the Mulva Center. Today, they handle most of the cooking themselves but rely on a small team for events.
What sets them apart? Quality and creativity. They taste and experiment constantly, even sampling lamb dumplings for an upcoming Mongolian-themed dinner. Their advice for new entrepreneurs? Start small but dream big. From humble beginnings with just a table and oven, they now own two buildings and host large events with ease.
