Brazil and US leaders to tackle trade and crime talks
Washington D.C., USAThu May 07 2026
A top official from Brazil says the country's president will meet with his US counterpart to discuss trade and security issues. The meeting happens as both nations try to rebuild trust after past trade conflicts. Earlier, the US put heavy taxes on some Brazilian products, which hurt business between them. Those taxes were later removed, but questions still linger about fairness in trade.
One big topic will be Brazil’s instant payment system called Pix. The US started a wide check into how Pix works and other trade concerns in 2025. Brazil now says it’s ready to explain how Pix helps people and businesses. The government also wants to talk about protecting the Amazon forest, a major issue for both countries.
The Brazilian finance minister says his country will stand firm on its own rules while still trying to work out trade deals. He feels positive about the talk, hoping both sides can find common ground. Still, some argue that past trade wars show how hard it is to keep relations smooth.
