Recent data from smart collars shows that some dog breeds walk far less than expected. The study tracked millions of steps over 90 days across the U. S. , using GPS collars that now include smaller dogs thanks to a new model. The results reveal a wide range: the most active pups can reach over 20, 000 steps a day, while the least active average around 9, 500–11, 700 steps. The top ten breeds with the lowest daily averages are Akitas (9, 471 steps), Alaskan Malamutes (10, 189), Chow Chows (10, 327), Greyhounds (10, 655), American Bulldogs (10, 713), American Bullies (10, 729), American Staffordshire Terriers (10, 825), Labrador Huskies (11, 000), Great Danes (11, 300), and Pit Bulls (11, 729). These numbers come from a sample of at least 500 dogs per breed.
Large size often correlates with lower daily movement. A 2025 study of over 47, 000 dogs found that bigger dogs tend to be less excitable and calmer. This may explain why many of the breeds with low step counts are also large, such as Akitas and Great Danes. Temperament matters too; breeds known for independence or calmness, like Akitas and Chow Chows, naturally seek less constant activity. The Greyhound’s placement surprised many because the breed is famed for speed, not endurance. While a Greyhound can sprint up to 45 mph, it usually rests for long periods afterward, which keeps its step count low. Low activity does not mean a dog needs no care. Even breeds that walk less still require daily exercise and mental stimulation to avoid boredom, anxiety, or weight problems. Knowing typical step ranges helps owners spot changes that might signal health issues and choose lifestyles that match their dog’s natural energy.
