A decade ago, Europe saw a massive influx of migrants seeking refuge from conflict and poverty. Many found new homes in countries like Italy, Germany, and Belgium, but the journey to truly belong is far from over. Four migrants share their stories of struggle, adaptation, and the ongoing search for a sense of home. Naziru Usman Abubakar fled Maiduguri, Nigeria, in 2014 due to violence by Boko Haram. He carried his school certificate, a symbol of his educational dreams, through his perilous journey. Arriving in Italy, he faced numerous challenges, including racism and financial struggles. Despite these hardships, he pursued higher education and graduated from Turin University in 2024. While he acknowledges the opportunities Italy has provided, he also highlights the difficulties many migrants face in the country. Ehab Mzeal and his wife Aber Alabed arrived in Germany in 2015, escaping threats from both Islamic State and government forces in Syria. Initially overwhelmed by relief, they soon faced the challenges of adapting to a new language and culture. Mzeal found solace in his family and work as a nurse. However, he remains torn between his new life in Germany and the memories of his homeland, Syria. Nadia Feyzi, an Afghan refugee, arrived in Germany in 2016 with her young daughter. Despite initial success in her studies and career, she faced significant hardships, including the loss of custody of her daughter and residency issues. Living out of her car, Feyzi remains resilient, writing a book inspired by the lives of Afghan women. She hopes for a resolution to her residency issues, stating, "This is my country now. I fought for 30 years to be here. " Youssef Hammad, a Palestinian born in Yemen, moved to Gaza as a child. Seeking a brighter future, he left Gaza in 2014 and eventually settled in Belgium. He faced numerous challenges, including detention and failed attempts to bring his wife to Belgium. Despite these obstacles, he has built a life in Belgium, working as a supervisor, waiter, and translator. He remains ambitious, dreaming of further study and visiting his family in Gaza. These stories highlight the complex journey of migrants in Europe. They have found new homes and opportunities, but the struggle to belong and the longing for their homeland persist. The impact of their presence is felt across the continent, shaping a new, transformed Europe.
