High school team shines in business challenge while local events offer fun and learning

Orland Park, Flossmoor, Calumet City, Palos Heights, Frankfort, USAThu Jun 11 2026
A group of three girls from Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park recently took first place in a business competition hosted by Moraine Valley Community College. Instead of just tackling a regular project, they had to quickly come up with a full marketing plan for a new solar battery. The catch? They only had an hour to research and prepare before giving two short talks about their idea. Their winning approach included a simple but catchy slogan, "Charge on the Go, " and they focused on outdoor lovers, health-conscious people, and runners who need power while moving. In another part of town, the Flossmoor Veterans’ Memorial is adding benches with etched plaques for supporters to sponsor. Each bench costs $2, 500, and the money will help keep the memorial in good shape once it’s finished. The four black onyx benches with bronze plates will stand near the train tracks at 2525 Flossmoor Road, with a big reveal planned for later this summer. It’s a small but meaningful way for the community to honor local veterans. History fans in Calumet City can dive into the 1990s at a special event on June 14. The Historical Society Center will show old photos from the Daily Southtown newspaper, saved just before the paper merged with another in 2011. After the slideshow, visitors can join a scavenger hunt tied to a road trips exhibit—no stress, just fun prizes for those who participate. Best part? It’s all free.
Teen drivers in the area have a chance to earn scholarships by spreading safety messages. The SafeLIGHT Foundation picked 17 students from 9 high schools to be ambassadors this year. Each one gets $2, 500 for college just for sharing tips on safe driving through social media and school events. Since starting, the program has given out over $138, 000 to more than 50 students. Applications for next year are already open. Music lovers have plenty of free outdoor concerts to enjoy this summer. In Palos Heights, Memorial Park’s gazebo will host four different acts from June to August, all starting at 7 p. m. Whether you like country, classic rock, or old-school hits, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to bring your own chair or blanket—parking and entry are completely free. Over in Orland Park, the public library is bringing back two live music events in June. First up is Rosie & The Rivets, a band playing throwback hits from the ‘60s to early 2000s. Then, the Frankfort Brass Band will perform traditional tunes, plus there’s a mini parade for little kids to celebrate the country’s upcoming 250th birthday. Both shows promise a fun, family-friendly time.
