The notion that the US education system has conditioned Americans to accept socialism is a pressing concern. Just two decades ago, the idea of a presidential candidate proposing socialist policies would have been a political liability. However, today, it's not uncommon for politicians to advocate for socialist policies, such as price controls, government handouts, and economy-crushing taxes. But what's behind this seismic shift in American values?
By examining the Pew Research Center's survey revealing that 44% of individuals aged 18-29 have a positive view of socialism, while only 40% hold a positive view of capitalism, it's clear that the education system is to blame. Many young Americans are ignorant of the historical and current realities of socialism and communism, which have consistently led to widespread misery, despair, and death.
One of the primary reasons for this lack of understanding is the deliberate effort by some educators to denigrate capitalism while romanticizing socialism. This has created a generation of young people who are unaware of the principles of liberty, self-government, and free enterprise. Instead, they are taught to equate capitalism with racism, white supremacy, and colonialism.
Education institutions have also perpetuated this myth. Columbia University professor Mohamed Abdou has advocated for "revolutionary alternatives" to capitalism, while Marquette University professor Jodi Melamed linked individual liberty to "capitalist violence. " Spelman College's summer reading list included a book that promotes anticapitalist propaganda and equates slavery and capitalism to the rise of American power. California Polytechnic State University offers a "Whiteness Accountability Space" program that equates capitalism to oppression.
As Americans, it's essential to be horrified at the prospect of socialism, which endangers the very freedoms and prosperity that have made America the most exceptional nation in the world. However, if we want to reclaim our education system and teach the facts about socialism and free markets, we must first acknowledge the role that educators have played in shaping our society's values.
Capitalism has lifted millions out of poverty, while socialism has led to poverty, famine, and death. By returning to teaching the facts, good and bad, and nurturing critical thinking skills, American citizens will see the light and reject the socialist ideology that has infiltrated America. The future of our republic depends on it.
