Lyons' Feathered Residents: More Than Just a Meal

In the small town of Lyons, wild turkeys are not just a Thanksgiving dish; they're part of the community. These birds have become local stars, strolling through streets, perching on rooftops, and even making appearances outside shops. Their presence is so common that residents have started to see them as neighbors rather than just wildlife. One resident, Sylvia Hodgkinson, has made it a habit to wake up early and greet these feathered friends. She films them as they go about their day, sharing her encounters on social media. Her videos have gained quite a following, with many people enjoying the sight of these turkeys strutting around. The turkeys seem to be everywhere in Lyons, especially during the fall. Wildlife officer Joe Padia explains that this is because turkeys migrate to lower elevations during this time of year to find food and escape the snow. He also mentions that these turkeys are likely Merriam's turkeys, which are native to Colorado and can be found in most counties. Despite their abundance, these turkeys haven't caused any major issues. In fact, many residents see them as beneficial, as they help control pests. Padia advises against feeding them, though, to prevent disease spread. Mayor Hollie Rogin shares Hodgkinson's enthusiasm for the turkeys. She sees them walking in front of her house almost every morning, adding a touch of lightheartedness to the town.
