Las Vegas, Nevada, USA,Wed Apr 15 2026
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced a fresh lineup for their upcoming Lord of the Rings adventure, The Hunt for Gollum. The news broke during a CinemaCon event in Las Vegas on Tuesday, sparking excitement among fans. Jamie Dornan, known for his role in Fifty Shades of Grey, steps into the boots of Strider, the ranger also called Aragorn. This marks a significant change from the original trilogy where Viggo Mortensen portrayed the character. Dornan’s arrival suggests a new take on the legendary hero. The film will also feature Leo Woodall, who appeared in The White Lotus Season 2, as another Dúnedain named Halvard. Both actors join a returning cast that includes Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen, reprising their roles as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf. Lee Pace will return as Thranduil, the elf king from earlier films.
Kate Winslet is slated to play Marigol, a character who was only rumored to appear before. Her inclusion adds star power and intrigue to the storyline. Andy Serkis, who famously voiced Gollum in the original movies, directs and stars in this prequel. The plot follows Aragorn and Gandalf on a quest to locate Gollum and the ring that has driven him mad. The adventure is set before the events of the original trilogy, offering a new perspective on familiar characters. The film is scheduled for a December 2027 release. In related news, a separate Lord of the Rings project is being co‑written by Stephen Colbert, the Late Show host and devoted Tolkien fan.
