Nicardipine Leads the Charge Against Pregnancy Hypertension

InternationalFri Nov 06 2026
Medical experts have been studying how to best manage very high blood pressure during pregnancy. A recent review updated the 2010 findings to give clearer guidance for clinicians. Researchers searched through major medical databases to find all relevant studies. They focused on women with chronic or gestational hypertension who also had protein in their urine. The main goal was to see if nicardipine could lower blood pressure safely and quickly while keeping the mother and baby safe.

The analysis included 1,125 patients who received the treatment. All of them showed a big drop in both systolic and diastolic pressure. The success rate was nearly 100 percent. Nicardipine worked faster than labetalol, reaching target blood pressure in about 37 minutes on average. No serious problems were reported for either the mother or the baby. The team concluded that nicardipine is a very strong option for this condition.

This updated review confirms what the earlier study found. Nicardipine appears to be the best choice among available treatments. However, more research is needed to fully understand its safety profile. The decision about which drug to use might depend on budget constraints in different places. More studies are needed to make sure this treatment is safe for everyone.
