Rainfall Is Coming, But Alabama Still Faces a Drought
Alabama, USASun May 17 2026
Alabama’s weather forecast says rain will arrive later in the week, but it won’t be enough to fix the state’s long‑standing dry spell. Most regions will see light showers, while the southern part of the state—where drought is most severe—will get only a trickle.
The U. S. Drought Monitor shows large areas marked red, meaning Level 3 out of 4 drought severity. Other parts are in a moderate drought (orange) or almost there (yellow). Even with the upcoming rains, these colors are unlikely to change soon.
According to the National Weather Service, northern Alabama could receive up to 1. 5 inches over six days, with many areas getting a half‑inch to an inch by Saturday. In contrast, south Alabama might see only a few hundredths of an inch to half an inch. A cold front will push through mid‑week and linger, then a series of short bursts could trigger scattered afternoon storms.
Early in the week, the chance of strong storms is very low. The Storm Prediction Center has only a Level 1 risk for severe weather today and Tuesday, and the NWS thinks that chance is small. The outlooks for Sunday and Tuesday show minimal threat.
Looking ahead to the end of May, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center projects higher odds of above‑average rain across the state from May 24 to 30. Every county could see a 40‑50 % probability of wetter than normal conditions during that week, offering some hope for relief.
