Red Sox's Infield Puzzle: Where Will Alex Bregman Play?
Sun Feb 16 2025
The Red Sox have signed Alex Bregman to a three-year deal, but his position on the field is still up in the air. Bregman's willingness to play second base, despite his Gold Glove-winning third base skills, has the team considering different lineup options. Manager Alex Cora is keeping his cards close to his chest, stating that the team will decide on Bregman's position later.
Cora's hesitation suggests that the Red Sox are keeping their options open for top infield prospect Kristian Campbell. Campbell, who has experience at shortstop and in the outfield, is seen as a strong candidate for second base. If Campbell makes the team, Bregman could see time at both second and third base, with Campbell potentially playing left field. The team may also consider moving Jarren Duran to center field and Rafael Devers to DH on some days.
The Red Sox are weighing the defensive and offensive strengths of their players. Devers has been vocal about his preference to remain at third base, but Bregman and Campbell could provide a more robust defensive pairing. Campbell's offensive potential could also impact the playing time of Masataka Yoshida and Ceddanne Rafaela, who may see reduced roles or even lose their roster spots.
The team is also considering how to best utilize Rafaela, who has shown strong defensive skills but has reverse splits against left-handed pitchers. The Red Sox may prefer to develop Rafaela in Triple-A rather than giving him sporadic playing time in the majors. Carrying all three of Campbell, Rafaela, and Yoshida on the roster would leave just one spot for Romy Gonzalez, David Hamilton, and Vaughn Grissom.
The Red Sox's plans hinge on Campbell's performance this spring. If he struggles, Bregman could start at second base until Campbell is ready. If Campbell impresses, the team will have to figure out how to best utilize their infield talent.
