A prominent party in Malaysia’s ruling coalition has urged the government to set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) after recent accusations against the country’s anti‑corruption agency, the MACC.
Earlier this month, media outlets reported that MACC officials were allegedly aiding businessmen in taking over companies. The claims were based on internal documents and witness statements, but the agency has dismissed them as “baseless. ”
The MACC’s chief said the allegations were an attempt to undermine its investigations and enforcement work in the corporate sector.
Despite this defense, the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a key partner of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, says the denial is not enough.
DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo stated that a thorough inquiry must be conducted through an RCI, which would have the powers needed for a transparent investigation.
Transport minister and DAP leader Anthony Loke plans to propose the RCI at the upcoming cabinet meeting, according to local reports.
The Prime Minister’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Earlier this month, a special committee was created to look into the MACC chief after separate allegations of shareholding law violations surfaced.
The situation highlights ongoing concerns about corruption oversight in Malaysia and the need for clear accountability mechanisms.
