SC State University's Zen Dens: A Revolutionary Approach to Mental Health

In a remarkable feat, South Carolina State University has emerged victorious in Home Depot's 'Retool Your School' competition, securing a grand prize of $150,000. This funding has paved the way for the creation of four innovative 'Zen Dens' on campus, designed to provide a serene and comfortable space for students grappling with mental health challenges. The Counseling and Self-Development Center will also undergo a transformation with new furniture, flooring, and more. Christian Jackson, the center's director, expressed her gratitude for the 380,000 votes that poured in, attributing this success to a powerful community effort. In the past year, the center has made significant strides in destigmatizing mental health, and the Zen Dens are an extension of this groundbreaking work. Desiree Preston, a student at SC State, emphasized the importance of these pods for students who struggle with mental health issues and often hesitate to seek help. The Zen Dens offer a valuable opportunity for such individuals to find solace and support in a less intimidating environment. Izaiah Walker-Warren, another student, shared his personal connection to the project. Having traveled from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he understands the isolating feeling of being away from family during the holiday season. The Zen Dens will serve as a sanctuary for students like him, offering a space for reflection and contemplation.
