Storm Warning Hits Berkshire County – Stay Safe
Berkshire County, MA, USAWed Apr 01 2026
The National Weather Service issued a new severe thunderstorm warning at 8:45 p. m. for Berkshire County, lasting until 9 p. m. The warning says wind gusts could reach 60 miles per hour and that roofs, siding, trees and other structures might be damaged. The storm is moving east at about 45 miles per hour along a line from Rowe to the area west of Otis.
Affected towns include Pittsfield, Lee, Lenox, Becket, Florida, Savoy, Dalton, Hinsdale, Stockbridge, Windsor, Peru, Washington, Glendale, New Lenox, Lenox Dale, Eastern Summit, Yankee Orchards, Wheatleigh, Whitcomb Summit and Lenox Station.
The service urges residents to seek the lowest floor of a building and stay inside until the storm passes. Lightning is present, so any thunder heard means lightning can strike nearby. Heavy rain may cause flash flooding; avoid driving through flooded roads.
Lightning strikes happen about 25 million times a year in the U. S. , killing around twenty people. The danger rises when a storm is directly overhead and drops after it moves away. If you hear thunder, stay indoors, avoid electrical devices, and keep away from windows and doors. Wait at least thirty minutes after the last thunder before going outside.
If you cannot find shelter, avoid open fields, tall trees and water bodies. In woods stay near low trees. Do not camp in an open area during a storm; if forced, choose a valley or low spot. Remember that tents do not protect against lightning.
Heavy rain also poses road hazards. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles, especially trucks that can spray tire foam and reduce visibility. Slow down, use the middle lane when possible, and turn on headlights in low visibility. If you must stop on the side of the road, pull off far from guard rails and keep headlights on.
By watching the sky, staying inside when thunder sounds, and following these road safety tips, you can reduce risks from both lightning and flooding.
