Thailand Embraces LGBTQ+ Marriage After Long Wait
Bangkok, ThailandThu Jan 23 2025
This: A couple in Thailand, Rungtiwa and Phanlavee, tried to get married 12 years ago on Valentine's Day. They were dressed beautifully, with Rungtiwa in a white dress and Phanlavee in a black tuxedo. But when they showed their IDs, they were rejected. Why? Because they were both women, and at that time, same-sex marriage wasn't allowed in Thailand.
Fast forward to 2022, and things have changed. Thailand now recognizes same-sex marriages, and Rungtiwa and Phanlavee were thrilled to finally tie the knot. They joined other couples in a big wedding ceremony in Bangkok, celebrating this new law. Rungtiwa shared her feelings: "We've been together for 20 years, and now we can finally stand proudly as a married couple. "
Thailand isn't the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, but it's a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in the region. It's been a long wait for many couples like Rungtiwa and Phanlavee, but the day has finally come where they can be legally recognized and celebrated.
