As the world of safe sex continues to evolve, it's becoming increasingly clear that teens are redefining what it means to prioritize their health. Gone are the days of fear-mongering condom ads, replaced by a more nuanced approach that focuses on personal choice and empowerment. But what's driving this shift, and how can we support younger generations as they navigate the complexities of safe sex? One major factor is the proliferation of medical advancements like PrEP and doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy PEP). These game-changing treatments have made it easier for people to take control of their STI prevention, but in doing so, they've also led to a decline in condom use. According to researcher Steven Goodreau, the promotion of PrEP has overshadowed condoms as an STI prevention strategy, with many apps like Grindr listing condom use under "kinks" instead of "health. " But it's not just medical advancements that are driving this trend. Controversy over sex education is also playing a significant role. With no federal standards in place, states are free to decide what they teach, and the results can be varied. In some states, condom demonstrations are banned, while in others, students observe them as early as middle school. Young people are pushing back against these limitations, demanding comprehensive sex education that prepares them for healthy relationships. As Michelle Slaybaugh, policy and advocacy director for SIECUS, puts it: "We would never send a soldier into war without training or the resources they need to keep themselves safe. . . so why is it OK for us to send young people off to college without the information that they need to protect themselves?
