Traditional Exercise Review for Recovery

InternationalThu Nov 05 2026

A team of researchers reviewed dozens of studies to see how traditional movement practices affect people dealing with substance use. They looked at 20 separate trials that together included over 1,500 participants. The goal was to measure changes in anxiety, low mood, drug cravings, and overall quality of life.

Across the studies, participants showed clear improvements. Anxiety levels dropped significantly. Feelings of depression also decreased. Cravings for drugs lessened, and people reported feeling better overall in their daily lives. The review also found positive changes in specific areas like reduced withdrawal symptoms, better physical function, and improved mental outlook.

The analysis only looked at how long the exercise programs lasted, without comparing different types of traditional movement. Because of this, it’s still unclear which specific practices work best. Future research might compare different styles directly to give clearer answers and to test why these effects happen.
