Who's Next for the Cowboys? A Look at Potential Head Coaches
Arlington, USATue Jan 14 2025
The Dallas Cowboys are on the hunt for a new head coach. This time around, they have to follow a new rule, the Rooney Rule, which means they must interview at least two external minority candidates. Last time they looked for a coach, they hired Mike McCarthy. But now, McCarthy is out after five seasons, and the Cowboys are back to square one. They're going to meet with many coaches, and some of them are still busy with postseason games.
Let's take a peek at some possible candidates. Kliff Kingsbury, the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, might be on the list. He's got a unique offense, but it might not work well with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Still, Jerry Jones seems to like him. Aaron Glenn, on the other hand, has Texas ties and has done well as a defensive coach, allowing few points and having a strong run defense.
Ben Johnson, from the Detroit Lions, is also on the radar. He's been praised for his work with quarterback Jared Goff. Pete Carroll, who's won a Super Bowl, is the oldest candidate at 73. He's known for his defense. Kellen Moore, who used to work for the Cowboys, might be back in the mix. Brian Flores, a Bill Belichick protege, has had some success but also controversy. Robert Saleh has dealt with tough situations but could do well with the Cowboys' talent. Doug Pederson has a Super Bowl win under his belt but had issues in Jacksonville.
Anthony Lynn, who has coached running backs and been a head coach, is respected. Finally, there are wild cards like Jason Witten, who's had success in high school football, Deion Sanders, who might only coach if his sons are involved, and other coaches like Ron Rivera and Lincoln Riley.
