In 2026, Bangladesh faced a serious measles outbreak. This happened after years of progress with its vaccine program. The country had once controlled measles well. But then, things started to fall apart.
Between March 15 and September 13, 2026, Bangladesh saw 170,638 suspected measles cases. Out of these, 20,006 were confirmed. Sadly, 919 people died among the suspected cases. Even more heartbreaking, 100 deaths came from lab-confirmed cases.
Why did this happen? Several big problems hit the vaccine system. Political unrest from 2024 to 2025 made it hard to buy vaccines. Mass vaccination drives were delayed. Health workers became less motivated. Money and supplies got stuck. All of this hurt the fight against measles.
