Artificial leather
Material that imitates leather
Summary
Artificial leather, also called synthetic leather, is a material intended to substitute for leather in upholstery, clothing, footwear, and other uses where a leather-like finish is desired but the actual material is cost-prohibitive or unsuitable due to practical or ethical concerns. Artificial leather is known by many names, including leatherette, imitation leather, faux leather, vegan leather, PU leather (polyurethane), pseudoleather, and pleather.

This is better wording. As an inanimate object, it doesn't go on its own at all. The passive voice is entirely appropriate, and grammatically alcorrect

softened language on dependence on fossil fuels - PVC can be made with syngas or natural gas, energy requirement could be met with renewable sources. being energy intensive doesn’t automatically assume the energy source.
removed sentence and citation about persistence of dioxin in environment. while true, that has little to do with PVC production.
PVC production and dioxin production link seems tenuous, but an emotionally charged issue. having trouble finding high quality reports of meaningful levels of dioxin production in modern (read: economically advantageous) PVC production.
