In many modern science books, Charles Darwin is often painted as a legendary figure.  Writers such as Richard Dawkins and Jerry Coyne frequently mention Darwin in their works.  They refer to detailed biographies and historical accounts of science.  However, the Darwin they present is not a complete picture.  Instead, he is a mythic hero.  These authors seem to assume that readers already know about Darwin.  They expect readers to see him as a unique, timeless figure.  This idea of Darwin is part of what some call "science's imagined pasts. "  These are stories that scientists today tell about how science has developed over the past few centuries.

There is a twist in these books.  They promote the idea of natural selection.  This is the process where organisms change over time due to their environment.  However, the authors use a pre-scientific view of human action.  They suggest that history is shaped by great individuals like Darwin.  This is ironic because natural selection is about random, purposeless changes.  It is not about the actions of great men.

For those who read these books critically, there is another interesting point.  They are like biologists studying an organism's traits.  Dawkins and Coyne see traits as reflections of the environment where ancestors lived.  This is an imagined past of a different kind.  But just like with organisms, this way of interpreting texts works better the longer the text has been around.

Darwin's ideas have had a huge impact on science.  His theory of evolution by natural selection has changed how we understand the natural world.  However, the way he is often portrayed in modern science books is not always accurate.  It is important to remember that Darwin was a real person.  He lived in a specific time and place.  His ideas were shaped by his experiences and the science of his time.  It is also important to remember that science is a process of discovery.  It is not just the work of a few great individuals.  Many people contribute to our understanding of the natural world.  It is the collective effort of scientists over time that has led to our current knowledge.
