Colon cancer is a big deal worldwide, and it's becoming more common in the Middle East. In the UAE, more young people are getting diagnosed, which is worrying. This is likely due to bad lifestyle choices. A recent study looked into how much people in the UAE know about colon cancer and how they try to prevent it.

    The study happened between October and December 2024. It involved 910 adults from different backgrounds. They filled out a questionnaire about their knowledge of colon cancer, their risk factors, and whether they were eligible for screening. The questionnaire also checked how well they followed healthy habits to prevent cancer.

    The results showed that people's knowledge about colon cancer was not great. On average, people scored 10 out of 22 on a knowledge test. More than half of the people surveyed weren't sure they could spot colon cancer symptoms. Women, non-Emiratis, those with higher education, and people working or studying in healthcare scored better. Interestingly, those at higher risk of colon cancer didn't necessarily follow healthier lifestyles.

    Knowledge about risk factors didn't always lead to better eating habits. However, people who knew more about the risks were more likely to exercise. Sadly, only a small number of people knew about colon cancer screening programs or the recommended age for screening. Even fewer had actually gone for screening.

    The study highlights a big gap between what people know and how they act. This is a call for better education and early detection efforts, especially for those at higher risk. It's crucial to spread the word about colon cancer and encourage people to take action.

    One surprising finding was that higher knowledge didn't always translate to better health habits. This suggests that awareness alone isn't enough. People need practical steps and support to make healthier choices. It's also clear that screening programs need more promotion. People need to know they exist and why they're important.

    The study shows that there's work to be done in the UAE to fight colon cancer. But with the right efforts, it's possible to make a difference. Education and early detection can save lives. It's time to bridge the gap between knowledge and action.
