A big change is coming to Illinois politics. Senator Dick Durbin, who has been a key figure in the Democratic Party for a long time, has decided not to run for re-election in 2026. This could open up another significant seat in the state, adding to the uncertainty and competition among Democrats. Despite some gains by former President Donald Trump in the state, Illinois remains a stronghold for Democrats, with Vice President Kamala Harris winning the state by a significant margin in the last election.  Durbin's seat is expected to stay in Democratic hands, but the race to fill it will be closely watched.

Durbin's retirement is part of a broader trend among Senate Democrats, with several other senators also announcing their plans to step down ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. This includes Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Gary Peters, and Tina Smith. With Democrats facing an uphill battle to maintain control of the Senate, these retirements add to the challenges they face.  They will need to defend their current seats and flip several Republican-held seats to regain the majority.  Durbin's departure leaves a big shoe to fill, but it also presents an opportunity for a new generation of leaders to step up and make their mark on Illinois and the nation.
