The idea of creating a city at Starbase isn't new. Musk first mentioned it on social media in 2021. The push for incorporation gained momentum in December 2024, when more than 70 residents signed a petition. Most of the signers are SpaceX employees, showing strong support within the community.

However, the idea of turning Starbase into a city isn't without controversy. Environmental advocates have raised concerns about the potential impact of increased development. In December 2024, community organizations sued Texas, alleging that wastewater from SpaceX launchpads was contaminating nearby wetlands. The election to decide the fate of Starbase is set for May 3, with voting restricted to those living near the SpaceX launch site. If the election passes, Starbase could become the newest town in Cameron County since Los Indios in 1995.
