In 2024, the University of Texas found itself in hot water. Five individuals from the athletic department were caught breaking NCAA rules.  They were caught gambling on sports.  This is a big no-no in college sports.  The violations happened between July and November 2024.  The people involved included two football players, a student assistant, a non-student athlete connected to the women’s tennis team, and an athletic department employee.  The total amount of money wagered? Nearly $15, 000.  The NCAA has strict rules against gambling on sports they sponsor.  The bets were placed on a daily fantasy site, which is legal in Texas.  However, traditional sports betting is not.

        The university used a service called ProhiBet to catch these violations.  ProhiBet is a monitoring service mandated by the SEC.  It helps keep an eye on betting activity.  The NCAA received about 100 reports of sports wagering violations in 2024.  This is double the amount from 2023.  The university took action against the individuals involved.  One football player was initially ruled ineligible but later reinstated.  He had to donate his winnings to charity.  Another football player had a history of gambling issues and sought help from his parents.  He left the program and stopped playing college football.  The student assistant was fired.  The other two non-student athletes received warnings and additional education on sports betting.

        The University of Texas is not the only school dealing with this issue.  Many colleges are grappling with the rise of sports gambling.  The NCAA has been cracking down on violations.  The increase in reports shows that the problem is growing.  The NCAA needs to do more to prevent this.  Schools need to educate their athletes and staff about the dangers of gambling.  They also need to enforce stricter penalties.  The University of Texas' case is a wake-up call.  It highlights the need for better monitoring and enforcement.  The NCAA must take action to protect the integrity of college sports.  Sports gambling is a serious issue.  It can ruin careers and reputations.  The NCAA must do more to prevent it.
