The University of Iowa has decided to move on from Fran McCaffery, who spent 15 years as the head coach of the men's basketball team. McCaffery's final record stands at 297 wins and 207 losses, making him the winningest coach in Hawkeye basketball history.

        McCaffery's last season was a bit of a struggle, with the team finishing 17-16 and bowing out in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. This was a far cry from the heights he reached during his tenure. He took over a struggling program in 2010 and turned it around.  He led the Hawkeyes to the NCAA Tournament seven times and won a Big Ten Tournament title in the 2021-22 season.

        McCaffery's impact went beyond wins and losses. He developed some of the greatest basketball players to come through Iowa City. Luka Garza, who was named the Naismith National Player of the Year for the 2020-21 season, and Keegan Murray, who was named the Karl Malone National Power Forward of the Year in 2021-22, are just a few examples.  McCaffery also sent several players to the NBA, including Tyler Cook, Devyn Marble, and Joe Wieskamp.

        McCaffery's coaching career began at Siena, where he led the Saints to a record of 112-51 and won back-to-back-to-back MAAC regular season and tournament titles. He took his team to three straight NCAA Tournaments before moving to Iowa.

        McCaffery's departure leaves a big shoe to fill. The Hawkeyes will need to find a coach who can continue the program's success and develop players for the next level. The athletic director, Beth Goetz, praised McCaffery's dedication and passion for the game, saying that his impact on the institution and the community will be lasting.

        McCaffery's legacy at Iowa is one of transformation and success. He took a struggling program and turned it into a consistent contender. His ability to develop players for the next level is a testament to his coaching skills.  He will be remembered for his contributions to the sport and the university.
