A renowned French scientist, Étienne-Émile Baulieu, passed away at 98 in his Paris home. He was a pioneer in hormone research and is best known for creating the abortion pill.  His wife, Simone Harari Baulieu, shared the news on social media.

The abortion pill, known as RU-486 or mifepristone, was developed in the early 1980s. It works differently from the morning-after pill.  Instead of stopping ovulation, it blocks progesterone, a hormone that helps a fertilized egg attach to the uterus.  This prevents pregnancy from starting.
