Chilean Adults with Body Aches Sleep Less but Move More at Work

ChileTue Nov 03 2026

Researchers looked at health data from Chile. They studied over five thousand adults. The survey ran from 2016 to 2017. Nearly four in ten people reported muscle or joint pain in the past week. That is thirty-eight percent.

People with pain slept less. On average they got sixteen fewer minutes each night. The difference was real and not due to chance. Those without pain slept closer to the recommended seven to nine hours.

But the story changes at work. Adults with pain actually moved more during their jobs. They added twenty-eight minutes of activity compared to peers. Yet they moved less getting around. Travel activity dropped by twelve minutes. Maybe pain makes commuting harder.

Total exercise time barely changed. The sixteen-minute difference could be random. Sitting time also stayed about the same. So pain does not mean people sit all day. It shifts how they move.

Meeting health goals was tough for many. Only about a third hit the exercise target. Similar numbers kept sitting under four hours. Less than half got enough sleep. Pain makes these goals harder but not impossible.
