Deep in the Amazon, a silent battle is unfolding. Indigenous communities are facing a growing health crisis linked to illegal gold mining. In the Munduruku community of Sai Cinza, a three-year-old girl named Rany Ketlen is struggling with severe health issues. She has never been able to lift her head and suffers from muscle spasms. Scientists are investigating whether mercury contamination is to blame. Preliminary data suggests that at least 36 people in the area, mostly children, have neurological disorders that cannot be explained by genetic tests.

The situation is dire. Families in the area rely on fishing for survival, but the fish are contaminated with mercury. Even though they know the risks, many continue to eat the fish because they have no other choice. The Brazilian government has taken steps to address the issue, but the mercury left behind by miners will continue to pose a threat for decades.

The problem is not just limited to Sai Cinza. Across the Amazon, Indigenous communities are facing similar challenges. A study found that 10 out of 15 mothers tested in three Munduruku villages had elevated mercury levels. Another study found that 12 out of 13 people in a Yanomami village had dangerous levels of mercury in their bloodstream.

Proving a direct link between mercury contamination and health issues is complex. Scientists are conducting a multi-year study to gather more data. They are following 176 pregnant women and testing their babies during their first years of life. The goal is to provide concrete evidence that mercury is causing disabilities.

Despite the challenges, researchers are determined to uncover the truth. They believe that without their studies, the crisis will continue to be ignored. The fight for Indigenous health in the Amazon is far from over, but every piece of data brings them one step closer to finding a solution.
