The Street Fighter live-action movie has a new director.  Kitao Sakurai will be taking the helm.  He is known for his work on The Eric Andre Show and has directed two feature films, Aardvark and Bad Trip.  He is also an executive producer on the upcoming season of Netflix’s Beef.  This is a big deal because Sakurai will be bringing his unique style to the Street Fighter universe.

        The Street Fighter franchise has been around since 1987, when it was first released as an arcade game.  It features one-on-one battles with martial artists.  Some of the most memorable characters include Ryu, Ken Masters, Chun-Li, Guile, and the villainous M. Bison.  The second game, Street Fighter II, became one of the best-selling arcade games.  The franchise has an estimated gross of $14 billion.

        This isn't the first time Street Fighter has been adapted into a live-action movie.  In 1994, Jean-Claude Van Damme starred as Colonel Guile in a film that received negative reviews but still grossed nearly $100 million worldwide.  The film featured a star-studded cast, including Raul Julia as M. Bison, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, Damian Chapa as Ken Masters, and Bryon Mann as Ryu.  Despite the criticism, the film has developed a cult following over the years.

        The new live-action Street Fighter movie is set to release in theaters on March 20, 2026.  This is a long time to wait, but fans are hoping that Sakurai's unique vision will bring something fresh to the table.  The plot details are being kept under wraps, so it's anyone's guess what the movie will be about.  But one thing is for sure: fans are excited to see what Sakurai brings to the Street Fighter universe.

        It's interesting to note that this is not the first time a live-action Street Fighter movie has been attempted.  In 2019, Danny and Michael Philippou were in talks to direct the film, but they dropped out to work on Bring Her Back.  This is a common occurrence in Hollywood, where directors often drop out of projects to pursue other opportunities.

        The new live-action Street Fighter movie is a big deal for fans of the franchise.  It's a chance to see their favorite characters come to life on the big screen.  But it's also a chance for the franchise to reach a new audience.  The Street Fighter franchise has been around for decades, and it's still going strong.  With a new director at the helm, there's no telling what the future holds for the franchise.
